The Kindness Club

Last winter, the pupils of a preparatory school in Kairouan started a “Kindness Club”. Every Wednesday afternoon, they visit an old people’s home near their school.

“Can I help you?” is the first thing Nadia, fourteen, says when she arrives. Some pupils read newspapers to the residents, who cannot see well any more. Others help them write letters to their grandchildren. Ali can play the oud, so he gives a small concert every month.

One afternoon, while the pupils were decorating the dining room for a birthday, an old man was telling stories about his childhood in the medina. Everybody stopped working to listen. “In my opinion, these stories are better than any history book,” Ali said later.

The club now has thirty members. “I believe that helping others makes us happier,” explains their teacher, Mr Gharbi. “I hope that every school will have a club like ours one day.”

Writing: an article about volunteering

writing and self-assessment

Your school wants to start a volunteering club.

Task: write a short article of 8 to 10 lines for the school magazine. Say what members can do to help others, describe what you were doing the last time you helped someone, and say what you hope for the club.

Steps
  1. I read the task and underline: who I write to, the topic, the length, the type of text.
  2. I list my ideas, then I put them in order: introduction, two or three points, conclusion.
  3. I write my draft with linking words (first, then, because, while, so, finally).
  4. I check with the checklist: grammar of the module, spelling, capital letters, full stops.

Join the Helping Hands Club!

Our school is starting a volunteering club, and everyone can join. Members can help younger pupils with their homework, clean the school garden or collect books for the village library. Last month, I was walking home when I saw an old lady who was carrying heavy bags. While I was helping her, she was telling me about her grandchildren in Canada. It made me so happy! In my opinion, helping others is the best way to feel useful. I believe that a small act of kindness can change someone’s day. I hope that many pupils will join us next week!

One good example among many: compare, don’t copy.
